The Carnal Imperative

I'm going to start with a joke. Its a joke that I actually created, at least I think I did. If someone else previously told this joke then I apologize ahead of time. Here it is.

Ted walked into the office Monday morning eager to share the good news he received over the weekend.  "I'm so relieved," he exclaimed to his co-worker Frank. "My wife Linda finally got that part-time job she was looking for!"  "That's great Ted," Frank responded. "What will she be doing?"
"She's a waitress at the new Tapas Bar in town. She's very excited about it."
Frank had a shocked reaction. "A topless bar? That's her new job? Are you sure you want that for your wife, Ted?", he asked.
"Oh yeah," Ted replied. "I mean, you know what a people person she is and the money is great."
"But Ted," Frank asked, "what are you thinking...your wife...a waitress in a topless bar?" Ted finally understood Frank's confusion. "No Frank, not a topless bar, its a Tapas Bar!" he explained with a chuckle.
"Oh I see," Frank answered with a sigh. " Thats a relief.!" Ted laughed after clearing up the misconception.  "Trust me Frank, I would never allow Linda to work at a topless bar. It would interfere with her other part-time job at the strip club." .

Okay thats the joke. Now you're asking yourself, what does it have to do with what we're talkng about. It will become apparent shortly.

What a confusing, dichotomous season Mardi Gras is!  Its the time of year in New Orleans when we celebrate Carnival... a fun-loving ,seedy, uninhibited ;period of debauchery that when translated, literally means "Dance of the Flesh." Of course the depravity comes to an abrupt halt on Ash Wednesday as everybody who misbehaved yesterday seeks religious forgiveness today, in humble acknowledgement of their shenanigans from the previous three weeks. Like they say, its easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission, but technically, we do have permission of sorts. Its always struck me as somewhat hypocritical to shut down the city for Carnival right on the cusp of Christianity's high holy day. Two diametrically opposed ideals coexisting at their own peril. I suppose when one thinks about it that conflict has always existed as a condition of our shared humanity. The struggle between the flesh and the spirit. I noticed this year 2018 that Valentines Day fell on Ash Wednesday making February a trifecta of human emotions ...love,depravity and spiritual purity. How can a person confidently navigate the complexities of all that in a responsible manner? I will try... for all of us.
Lets take a look at sex and all it encompasses. How screwy is it that sexual gratification is a major motivator for human behavior. I think I can safely say it ranks an arguable number three behind access to food and water. But its not our fault apparently because, as it turns out, humans are "hard-wired" with a sex drive. Your next question of course is why, and the answer is supposed to be "to propagate the human race." but actually that stopped being the reason a long time ago  In the 1976 movie "Silver Streak", Jill Clayburgh asks Gene Wilder if he's ever written any sex manuals and if he feels that he's qualified to do so. He answers coyly, "well, I know what goes where and why." Good answer but a way simplified statement about a very complex and confusing subject. In today's society there are countless and perplexing motivations for engaging in sex. In the recent movie "Downsizing" Matt Damon is asked by a woman why he slept with her in the first place and she rattles off this list of reasons why she thinks he may have, including what she called the "pity f**k." . For some the sex drive is a short trip, but for others it's a cross country excursion that wreaks of desperation, like in the John Cusack movie "The Sure Thing" Its the drive to alleviate sexual desire and maybe even find love along the way. Okay, enough with the movie references. Lets move on
That brings up another subject that complicates the mix. Love and Lust, both with capital Ls. I've brought it up before. Lust clouds the issue of what true love is, and, when you're young, its virtually impossible  to discern the difference. Fast forward in time and ask yourself why half of marriages fail and I think Lust is the culprit. Adults are ,of course, able to distinguish between the two, but even in their maturity they allow the dividing line to get blurry. Love takes a backseat to lust even when they recognize it. Confusion about what you really feel and what your lust says you need. Once again, a spiritual need at war with a physical desire. Are those last two sentences even sentences? Let's continue.
Consider this for a moment without biting my head off. The Pornography Industry in the U.S. is a multi-billion dollar business for a reason. Estimates are between 8 to 13 billion dollars a year. It addresses a consumer demand. Ask yourself why professional sports is a multi-billion dollar industry. Demand is met in the marketplace.  To put things in perspective even more so, the pornography industry worldwide revenues  approach 97 billion a year. The Pornography industry makes more money than Major League Baseball, The N.F.L. and the NBA combined.   So what is my point? Is it possible that the availability of sexual imagery, and its cathartic effects, calms the masses and, perversely, preserves traditional values such as marriage and fidelity? Is that why it is so massive?
Probably not , but it does provide the thrill without consequences. That is its service and product.  But sexual content objectifies women and victimizes the young. Both valid points. Its a good thing that organized religion has stepped in and made it very clear that pornography is bad. That's what religion provides with its emphasis on family values and respectable behavior, promising an eventual heavenly reward. That's what its supposed to do and it largely does that. Bear with me though.
Many years ago I had the occasion to attend an LSU- Alabama football game in Tiger Stadium as a a guest of a friend. I'm not a huge football fan now and had even less interest back then about the outcome of the game but I did know that most of my family and relatives were fanatics for the Crimson Tide. I should explain that I was a guest of a family who were huge Tiger fans and were allowing me to enjoy the game from the LSU student section. So there I was on the LSU side shoulder to shoulder with staunch supporters of the Tigers and for some reason I failed to acknowledge the inappropriateness of verbally rooting for the Tide while sitting neck high with Tigers in the LSU student section.
Well, needless to say I learned a lesson on that chilly Saturday evening. I could try to rationalize my behavior that night but honestly, I chose to ignore the obvious moral stand that I should have taken. I was literally sitting on the wrong side of a  room that identified me as having a certain mindset,  but I excused myself from behaving the way I knew I should have. By now, you're asking yourself what does that have to do with anything.  Its called hypocrisy in some circles, treason in others.  Just everything that's all.
As I said earlier, The Church has officially taken, I believe, the correct  moral stand on the issue of pornography. As a physical concrete symbol of moral purity The Church cannot realistically take any other stand. Improper and deviant sexual conduct is a real problem in our society. That is the official stand and that's the side of the room they profess to occupy.  It speaks to the power of human  sexual desire and its many  diverse forms. However, according to statistics, use of pornography is "the sin of choice" within The Church in general. A former minister, pornography user and eventual counselor on the topic calls it "the dark magic."In essence he is saying that the human sex drive is God's dark magic. Could I have misunderstood that statement? Don't forget that we are "hard-wired" for sexual gratification as a species. It's God's doing (we believe), and as human beings we are left with the task of reigning it in and using it responsibly. I liken the whole thing to creating a toaster and then forbidding it to hang out with bread. I am particularly baffled with the whole idea of why God would intelligently design humans with an urge that so often destroys their lives and the lives of those around them. It is the one thing that has plagued humanity from the beginning. From what I remember from the Old Testament even God's angels wrestled with sexual desire and begetting was a major activity linking the Old Testament to the New Testament. The definition of begetting is not merely the act of sexual reproduction. It carries with it a historical causal domino effect. Sex is the seed by which sin is passed down through the ages. Sin being, ( and this is my own interpretation.), that which results in human pain and suffering.
"The Devil made me do it." Isn't that what Flip Wilson used to say about prurient behavior?
Why Satan though?  Isn't it just testosterone? Maybe God and Satan are just convenient fall guys for explaining what we don't understand about the human mind. Why it does what it does and why it needs what it needs. By conventional thinking, God in His wisdom has combined this damning mechanism of sexual desire, testosterone, with the regulation of other essential bodily functions. Its a design flaw of the highest order.  So how does one placate the libido?
Eliminating the human libido would be an awesome task, not awesome as in wonderful, but as in
"a tremendously protracted process involving generations of consenting participants dedicated to profoundly changing what it is to live in human society." Consider what it would mean to live in a world without the distraction of sexual desire. Notice I did not say without Love. Love is experienced free from the trappings of lust by virtue of proximity, shared values and shared experiences, as are other emotions separate from the libido. Sexual desire identified as a destructive part of our human makeup would not exist, and along with it the irrational behavior it inspires such as infidelity, sexual discrimination based on sexual identity and enterprises committed to sexual exploitation of humans. The term recreational sex would be meaningless. Sex as a group activity would be an absurdity. Overpopulation, unwanted pregnancy... gone. I know, that's not a sentence.  The pornography industry would collapse ( go limp, if you will) , human trafficking and , prostitution would all be a distant memory.
Sadly, this bold step would not solve all of our social ills. Life and Death, love and hate, happiness and despair would still coexist. And furthermore because of that knowledge humanity would soundly reject such a proposal. I think we have to blame the engineer of our human behavior God himself for our predicament.  Sex provides too much pleasure, too much even if it is often at the expense of those around us. If only we could safely squelch the production of testosterone in humans. Its the culprit, Libido by another name. It is the serpent in our Eden. Unfortunately, testosterone is an essential element of biological regulation.  Our bodies need it for a bunch of other stuff. That's the Catch 22. Hmm, would that be yet another movie reference or a literary one? I'll say both. Nothing else seems to permanently kill the urge for the long term, and people have tried. Would you believe corn flakes, saltpeter and licorice were once considered "cures" for the human libido? Nowadays the closest thing we have to a cure is chemical castration using a substance called GnRH agonist mostly reserved for sex offenders. The fact of the matter is that if one day we do discover a way to eradicate the human sex drive with all of its negative fallout, I suspect there will be a mad dash to the back of the line. Its the way we are. Cost versus benefit.
Would humanity's spiritual enlightenment increase in the absence of this Satanic carnal influence? That is the big question, and I think the answer is yes.
I was watching a TV show recently that used the analogy of two dogs fighting for dominance inside the human psyche, one good and one bad. Upon hearing the analogy, another person asks which one eventually wins. The response was, "the one you feed." It brings up another question though that begs for an answer. What if there was only one dog... the good one?
I promised to explain the significance of my opening joke before I shut this down and all I can say is this. Sexual desire may actually be the root of all evil, but the love of money runs a close second. It's a cost versus benefit comparison between the two. The illusion of sexual intimacy is marginalized and traded for money every day in this world. According to Rudyard Kipling its the oldest profession. The pursuit of both  test the limits of our humanity, but that is a subject for another day.
Meanwhile, last Saturday on the streets of The French Quarter in New Orleans, the 10th Annual World Naked Bike Ride pedaled down the streets of New Orleans' French Quarter under the guise of promoting Bicycle Safety. Hmm, bike safety? If you say so.

Cadillac Jack and The Burden of Time

Looking out the dusty window pane Polly GoodPiece followed the movement of the lone figure walking slowly in the desert as it approached from the distance and finally arrived on the front porch of the modest structure that was home to the man just now arriving. She had invited herself in without prior consent but she knew her car parked conspicuously outside next to his vintage '57 Cadillac El dorado would be the clue that a visitor would greet him as he opened the front door cautiously. He removed the well worn wide brimmed fedora from his head and dabbed the sweat from his brow and then made a defiant warning to his as yet unseen guest.
"Whoever you are you best be aware that rattlesnakes and          scorpions frequently find their way inside here just as you         have.I generally kill some and cook the others for supper. Not       too many strangers pop in on me so I don't rightly know what I'll wind up doing with you until you identify yourself."
The figure paused and waited for a response from the unwelcomed visitor who then stepped into view out of the shadows in the corner of the room.

"Hello Jack. It's been a long time" Polly announced demurely.
"You have to forgive me. Sometimes the desert heat plays tricks with my eyes and ears. My God, is it really you Polly?"Jack asked.

" You know you're not an easy person to find. A mutual friend of ours thought you might be in Las Vegas and he gave me the names of some of your old haunts. There was a Pit Boss at a casino on the strip who said he knew you or someone named Cadillac Jack who lived somewhere out in the Arizona desert that traveled back and forth. I figured it might be you. Whats the matter ...the name Jack Dangerfield wasn't suiting you anymore? Polly said.

Jack smiled knowingly and passed by her as he went to the kitchen to get a drink. He offered Polly a bottle of her own but she declined.

" You know as well as I do that being Jack Dangerfield isn't good for my health these days. By the way, its probably not a good idea to be seen with me or asking strangers about me. For all I know there are people who followed you out here, people who would do anything to have my head on a platter." He warned. "Besides being Cadillac Jack isn't so bad. I saved my money and have enough to squander in Vegas every now and then. The only down side is keeping the caddy in vintage condition in this dry desert climate. Not to mention the occasional sand storm."He explained.

Polly sighed and looked out a window overlooking the makeshift garage that shielded Jack's prized automobile.

"That's funny.I remember the last time we rode in it together. We were in New York City for a week seeing the sights together. We had a wonderful time there and our last night you took me out to the fanciest restaurant I had ever been to until then. I never told you but I was convinced that you were going to propose to me then."

Jack responded with a slight embarrassed blush on his face fortunately hidden by his suntanned complexion.

"I don't know what to say except that I probably did you a favor by not doing that. That's the thing about love triangles. They always leave somebody with a broken heart. Not really sure who I was protecting, me or you or even Roger. You know he was in love with you too. I would have surely lost a friend over that. My best friend. Those are a rare commodity in my line of work."

" Roger asks about you occasionally. I suppose he wonders if we still keep in touch. I assure him that we don't but I think he still suspects that we do anyway. I tell him that after your ordeal with Dick Dragon you needed time to yourself." Polly answered.

"My ordeal with Dick Dragon was why I left. That's true. He was the closest thing to a bonafide supervillain that I ever knew. You know what he wanted from me and I couldn't let that happen."

" Now that you mention it, what ever happened to your other ride? The one that wasn't street legal I mean. You do still have it don't you?" Polly said with an inquiring plea.

Cadillac Jack looked away from Polly and gazed into empty space as if solving a mathematical equation in his head. He chose his words carefully.

"I was never really sure if anyone would take care of it and understand how to drive it as well as Jack Dangerfield did. Surely not Cadillac Jack. The thing about driving a vehicle like that is that its very tricky getting to and from certain places. Every journey and every destination is equally complex though.. Forgive me for talking in riddles but a vehicle like that... a thing like that... should never be driven by anyone I can think of. But to answer your question, I could tell that I buried it somewhere out there in the desert, some place where nobody would ever think to look in the hope that maybe one day I could actually take another drive. One that would change things for the better. Maybe Jack Dangerfield would have saved it but Cadillac Jack... he destroyed it because it was too much trouble to maintain. And frankly who needs a burden like that?"

Polly GoodPiece turned her gaze downward as she listened to his final words. A look of disappointed resignation overtook her face.

" Well, I guess I should be going. I have a long trip ahead of me tonight and my flight back home leaves at 10:00 a.m. tomorrow."

Jack felt the awkwardness of the moment as she started to leave and he wanted the opportunity to say more and explain more but he didn't. He merely expressed regret for not having known she was coming. "I would have picked you up and brought you back to the airport. It would have been like old times Polly. Wait, what am I saying, how could you know for sure that you would find me?" He said. "You know, you never did tell me why you really came all the way out here to see me."

" I just wanted to see you Jack. Something has been eating at me lately and silly me thought you might be the only one who could advise me about it. That's all."

" Well, ask me now before you leave. Maybe there's something I could do."Jack replied.

Polly fumbled with her purse as she retrieved her car keys for the long drive back.

" Oh Jack, I guess I wasted my time coming here but I know you and how you feel about phones and technology and such. A phone call wasn't an option. You know, you touched on something earlier. Something about broken hearts and that kind of nonsense. Let me ask you this one thing before I leave. If you knew someone with a broken heart and you had the means to fix it , wouldn't you at least want to try?" Polly asked.

"Whoa, did you say hearts? You above all people know that's not my area of expertise. There's no logic involved but just for the sake of argument, just on the chance that you're asking me what I think you're asking me, this is my answer, you can't know for sure what will happen. Jack Dangerfield would tell you that if you fix one broken heart by unnatural means a thousand more may be broken because of it. I ask you, who could live with that uncertainty?"

Jack watched the trail of dust kicked up from Polly's car as she pulled away and disappeared over the horizon and he knew full well what her intention had been all along. At least he thought he knew and because of that he resolved to drink himself to sleep that night. One of the benefits of living alone he thought was that no one could see what had really become of Jack Dangerfield, the once unstoppable force of nature. In his state of numbness he asked the absent Polly a silent cryptic question,
" How do you think it got broken in the first place, honey?"

For David

For David
I tried to find solace and comfort listening to music on Wednesday after I was informed of David's death, but it was a futile exercise. The news brought me to my knees and overwhelmed me. My mind was flooded with bits and pieces of memories from our youth and my brain began to mentally catalogue the countless mutual rites of passage  that we experienced together. What we learned about life and love and all that other stuff in between , we learned together. After all, he was for all purposes more a brother to me than a friend. I knew his house and backyard better than I knew my own. I always assumed that I was welcome there and ,like it or not The Millers had a third son in me.                                                                                I was always impressed with David's curiosity about everything- science, chemistry, model rocketry, race cars, mechanics, electronics and of course music. All of these things at such an early age but music was the thing that sealed our bond. When we discovered that , it gave us both a sense of direction and power. We played and sang together side by side for fifteen years or more and, to make things more interesting , we even found                                                                                       time to fight over the opposite sex.
Although we stayed in touch we did eventually each go our own way.
You know, college and all. Work and such. We went separate ways not intentionally but incidentally.  We made new friends that weren't mutual friends because we were pulled in two different directions. For a while David tried his hand at acting with Slidell Little Theatre and sang in a Barbershop Quartet too. I believe I was the very first patient he examined as Dr. Miller O.D.  when he happened to be showing me his new office on the day his equipment finally arrived.
I guess marriage changes a person. Having children does too. It is a natural progression though and David eased into the role of husband and father with his usual confidence. By its nature marriage alters existing friendships and different priorities emerge but David was always David. He was  a performer and a risk taker to boot. A pattern in his behavior became apparent as early as elementary school to me.  I admired his confidence and his willingness to get on the stage in Junior High and in High School whether to play or act. As far as his romantic conquests are concerned David confided in me often and he opened up to me about everyone and everything during long and protracted midnight drives in his car on the streets of Slidell. Maybe he didn't realize it at the time but in addition to listening I was also mentally taking notes. Let's face it , he knew how to get the girl.  Was he a Romeo? No I don't think so. But a charmer? Absolutely. Likeable and funny. I salute him for his game and I will admit  now that I was often jealous of it in my teenage years. No big surprise there.
I still don't know where he got the notion that skydiving was a worthwhile endeavor but he tried that as well. And fishing? That was news to me.
Over the past two decades David and I had very little to say to one another. At a class reunion a couple of years ago, we barely said two words to one another the entire time. I'm prepared to say that it was my fault in that ,in this day and age with technology the way it is, I could have made the call and reached out to him. We could have spent a day together showing pictures of our kids and reminiscing about band bus trips and rock star ambitions from our past. We could have done it face to face easily.  Thanks to social media  I was instead able to piece together his life as a dutiful husband, proud father and  doting grandpa from afar. It was a laudable end to a well spent life and I was happy for him. Whether he thought about our friendship much in his later years I don't really know.
I recently was watching a television program and one of the characters said something that hit me and in hindsight I think It was because it perfectly described my relationship with David.
The dialogue went something like this.
" You knew him for a long time."
" I guess you could say that, but it would probably be more precise to say that I knew him a long time ago."
In the final analysis I knew him only for a portion of his life, maybe half. The rest of it I experienced from a distance. But that half that I knew was essential to my own growth and happiness.
David Miller and I fought like brothers at times and then reconciled in like manner. I'd like to think in the wake of his death that he ultimately cared about me the same way I cared about him.
It was solid but unspoken and unchanged by years.

Marriage, Cohabitation and The Romantic Myth

I was raised to believe that marriage was a sacred institution and a lifelong comitment once entered into. Of course having now been married twice myself and now single for many years since, it still amazes me that anyone bothers to go through the legal steps of tying the knot.  Its not really a permanent knot though. Its more like a slipknot. From what I've read recently, traditional marriage is on it's way out. Its being replaced by simple cohabitation that provides all the benefits of marriage without the legal entanglements. But still it seems to me that this arrangement carries with it it's own  complications of the emotional and financial kind and ,although both parties are affected, I believe that women have the most to lose in "playing house" with "live- in" sex partners.
Cohabitation is a fancy term for what my mother used to call "shacking up." Despite the warnings about bad reputations that follow women in such arrangements, females today see it as their only opportunity to avoid spinster status. But why do men agree to these types of living arrangements? Its obvious to me that today's younger generation has accepted the premise that marriage is at best a short term proposition, something they learned from observing the world around them. God and Community still figure into the equation sometimes but I think I have zeroed in on why young women and men embrace the concept of cohabitation as a replacement for legal marriage. Each gender has their own reasons though for buying into it.
Why do men get married or cohabitate? It helps to know a little about men and what motivates them to do anything. One of my core beliefs these days is that men are basically pigs -selfish and opportunistic. Before the criticism starts I will qualify the statement by saying both genders suffer from imperfections of character and basic human frailty. I know that.  Young men, however,  have a lot to prove to themselves and to their peers and that is where the trouble starts for young women.. There is a  collective rush that men experience in their twenties and thirties to confirm their manhood and sexual identity.through identification with women and  the conquest of them sexually.. Its nothing new and nothing that women don't know about men. In today's society however, women store that information in the back of their mind and disregard it. I liken it to having an alarm clock that keeps trying to wake them up to the truth but with them constantly hitting the snooze button to avoid reality.  It leaves them easy prey for opportunistic men. Few are real con men, most are just leeches looking for validation from willing women. Men basically desire five things from women, (1) access to "long term, no- strings- attached" sex, (2) satisfaction of their need to spawn children that will perpetuate the illusion of their own immortality, (3) to confirm their sexual identity to their peers and to the world,(4) to provide a mother replacement figure that will care for them just as a mother would and (5) for financial support in part or in full.. This last reason is actually the number one strategy for men in their quest to enter into a no commitment sexual living arrangement. Its the males task however to convince the female that it is all for love and nothing more. Meaningful companionship is way down on a list that men reluctantly admit even exists.A.man will promise commitment to a  woman until he doesn't want her anymore..In a cohabitation situation this can be awkward at the very least and devastating at its worst. Women suffer most when living arrangements go bad. But lets say that it is a marriage situation after a period of cohabitation. Statistics say that people who cohabitate as a testing period begin with negative attitudes about marriage in the first place.will generally fail at marriage, leaving the woman abandoned still. Young couples convinced of their own infallibility will enter into the arrangements because they believe, mistakenly, that living together, and certainly marriage, will assure loyalty, stability and sexual fidelity. Of course , neither arrangement provides any of those things.
Why do women cohabitate with men or seek marriage? There are five reasons that occur to me -
(1) The fear of being alone and dying alone. Having been in a bad marriage before myself, I can honestly say that there are worse things than being alone and one of them is being trapped in a marriage that has gone bad. Marriage never has nor ever will provide protection from being alone, and frankly ultimately everyone dies alone. It is not a couple's activity. (2) the belief that there is no Prince Charming waiting to appear. There is no Mr. Right for them that is the perfect fit so they settle for the one that pops into view and who quotes, most convincingly, romantic babble purloined, not from great Romantic poets, but from teen sex movies and raunchy sitcoms. (3) to address the maternal instinct in the absence of a child. Some single women get pets to care for, others find a husband to raise as a child would be raised and domesticated. On the down side though, cohabitation results in unwanted children from careless, casual sex and children change the equation dramatically. In "temporary" relationships women pay the price for casual sex and men flee with no real responsibility except to their own conscience.(4) the need to feel loved even in the absence of deep feelings or real compatibility.(5) the need to prove their desirability and worth to their peers and to the world. As I have indicated both genders share the need to participate in certain rites of passage. Unfortunately those rites lack a sense of permanence for both sexes. Relationships and living arrangements and attitudes about true romance are seen as nomadic and serial in nature. Again women suffer the most from the phenomenon of serial cohabitation and multiple marriage. Ironically their worth as an acceptable mate for any man is lessened after so many temporary mates.
My beliefs about cohabitation and marriage ,and any pairing off of people with one another, come from observation-empirical rather than hypothetical. Experience has tainted my belief in true love and romance. I see the word romance as a substitute for emotional self preservation, more of a biological need than any mystical state or some soul tie to another. Arguing against marriage is like arguing against religion. Traditional teachings are difficult to abandon because they are reinforced by cultural myths taught by institutions. The institution of marriage reminds me of that phrase, "what is and what should be." Men enjoy this new phenomenon I think but women need to stop hitting the snooze button. Women should learn to discern the difference between infatuation, lust and the survival instinct of the opposite sex, Hasty decisions can result in long term misery.

Intervention

We put her in the ground today.
It was her destination all along.
Dictated by rebellion, determined by desire.
never realized or fully rendered.
Assisted by the belief in her own invincibility.
Convinced of immortality by her reckless pleasure
with no immediate consequence.
And peers who cheered her on and gave her validation.
While she herself bore the scars and wounds
of those less daring and free.
She bled for the sins of all who witnessed her glorious decline.
Her inevitable demise.
Her happy death.
Those who watched and smiled.
And did nothing...
Nothing to lift her up.

And what were we to do?
Those of us who stood above her today
The cowardly disciples of her self destruction.
Those of us who cry and ache and suffer her departure.
We stand  today with blood dripping from our hands
while crimson pools form at our feet.

My One True Love

When she is gone
then will I cling to you
I will turn to you
and fall apart
And crumble into nothing
Yours to reassemble
Yours to redefine

I will come to you for comfort
And hold you as I held her
I will call her name as I look into your eyes
and beg for your forgiveness of that sin.
Each kiss upon your mouth will be a Judas kiss
With each clutched hand and every passionate embrace
your sense of self will wane, as you become my consolation.

I will drain the life from you, solely selfish sustenance.
All for the sake of another, who you will never be
And wish above all else that you were somehow her
She who stood alone and loved without condition.
For all those things she was to me
You then will take her place
And I will be your newborn child.

Your breath across my neck
recalls her tender touch.
Recalls her sweet perfection in a world too far beneath her.
Your words ring so familiar, still remind me of the lips
from whence they first were spoken.
You will assume that thankless task of washing her away.
while striving to be what she once was.

I am the more to blame for never letting go.
More than you who settles for what is left behind.
Of me and my devotion to a memory just removed..
Acknowledged in advance the sacrifice you make
It is more than I should ask
of a faithful proxy...of a silent surrogate
of my  new and one true love
